On October 21, 2014, the international students of SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering(JIE) visited the Whampoa Military Academy Memorial in Guangzhou as part of the curriculum. The trip gave dimensionality to all that we had read or heard about military academies in China, in terms of their history and functionalities.
The Whampoa Military Academy was established by Dr. Sun Yat Sen with the help of the Soviet Union in 1924. Warfare and lifestyle of the soldiers over the years were delineated through a series of photographs, paintings and resurrected buildings from the time of inception of the Academy. Antique weapons, uniforms and artifacts on display composed several stories about war, revolution, struggle, discipline and life of the soldiers who trained in that academy. The life and achievements of Dr. Sun Yat Sen were chronicled in the house that he resided in whenever he visited the academy.
Learning about his achievements and impact on the people of China, before his demise and even years after, speaks volumes of his greatness. The international students feel privileged to study in a university established by him and be a part of his legacy. It was a tour that gave them a chance not just to see the triumphs and the glory that goes with being a soldier in china, but also an insight to the inner workings of the military academy.
