The SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) welcomes its first cohort of masters students in Guangzhou, China. The entering cohort consists of 31 students, of which, 24 are from Mainland China and seven are from international locations outside of China, including India, Mexico and Australia.
The 31 master students along with three JIE doctoral students attended the student orientation held at the new JIE building located on East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. The first and the second floors of the JIE building are ready to be occupied while the remaining third through fifth floors are still undergoing interior construction and are expected to be completed by the end of October 2014.
Co-Directors Jimmy Zhu and Wenjun Li started the orientation by celebrating the first cohort and the new academic year with a celebratory cake-cutting. In addition, various JIE Faculty members presented on their research topics and projects, including Ming Li, Zhaojun Liu, Yinliang Xu and Jingxi Zhu. Additional speakers and presenters on student degree requirements and curriculum included Associate Director Linjun Huang, JIE Staff Member Ziyan He and JIE Program Manager Jessica Sun.
The first cohort will take courses from JIE faculty in Guangzhou and at the same time, they will have access to courses that will be offered online or broadcasted from Carnegie Mellon University. This will certainly be the case for future cohorts who will be a part of the double-degree program offered through the JIE.
